What age must I be to attend CAPRI??

You need to be 17 years of age upon graduation. CAPRI recommends at least 16 years of age to enroll.

Do I need a High School Diploma or GED to enroll?

NO. You do not need a High School Diploma or GED to enroll in CAPRI. However, if you are applying for Financial Aid, there is a special test that you can take prior to securing your High School Diploma or GED, which you will need upon graduation.

When is the next start class?

You can get a general idea of the Cosmetology start classes by viewing our Calendar on this website. The best approach is to contact CAPRI at 1-800-BE-CAPRI for exact start dates in all of our programs.

How long will it take to finish?

Depending on the course and class schedule that you select, it can range from 5 months to 16 months.

  Is there an application fee?

NO. CAPRI does not have an application fee.

  Is there a registration fee?

YES. There is a registration fee of $100.00

How much money do I need to start?

You will need as little as $150.00 for the registration fee and the initial deposit for your Kit, Uniforms and Textbooks.

Can I attend if I am not a U.S. Citizen?

YES. An eligible non-citizen can also attend CAPRI Institute.

Do you offer full-time and part-time classes?

YES. CAPRI offers both full-time and part-time schedules. Please call 1-800-BE-CAPRI for exact schedules in all our programs.

Can I change my program of study?

YES. You can change your program by re-registering. You need to wait until the beginning of the month to change in with the new start classes. Prospective students should choose the right course for themselves, yet can change study with additional paperwork and possible additional fees. Also, note that the student’s accumulated hours are not transferable.

Can I change my schedule between day or night classes?

YES. You can switch from day to night or night to day only once. You also have to wait until the beginning of the month to change in with the new start classes.

What happens if I miss a class?

Missed hours can be made up. CAPRI provides students this opportunity on a reasonable basis to remain within your scheduled time of graduation.

Are there special schedules for mothers?

YES. We offer a Mom’s Schedule, Monday-Friday, 9AM-2:30PM. Many of our students are mothers and this schedule is quite helpful for them. Dads are allowed this special schedule also!

  Do students participate in clinic?

YES. Clinic is another way that you obtain practical experience at CAPRI. Students perform services in the clinic when they are half way through their program. This half way point acknowledges that you have moved from Junior status to Senior status within your course of study. Just prior to this point we will apply for your Senior Permit. Once your Permit is received, you will work on clients in our clinic. The Senior Permit also allows you to work in a salon or spa anytime other than your class schedule.

Can I transfer credits into CAPRI from a previous school?

YES, providing sealed transcripts from your previous school and pending State Board approval. To start this process of evaluation, you will need a breakdown of hours by subject including information on your last day of attendance and the number of hours completed.

What is the difference between CAPRI and a county vocational school?

CAPRI is a private school and specializes in Cosmetology related courses. All of our instructors are licensed by the N.J. State Board of Cosmetology. As a private school, we are nationally accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences. 100% of our students are placed and working in a salon or spa in N.J.

  Does CAPRI provide housing?

NO. CAPRI does not provide housing for students nor instructors. CAPRI has 5 campuses throughout N.J., where there is sure to be a campus near your home.

Will I be allowed to practice my course of study in NJ once I graduate CAPRI?

YES. You will be issued a Temporary License Permit from the State of N.J. which is valid for 3 months. Within those 3 months, the State will call you in to take your State Board Exam. Upon passing, you will obtain your N.J. licensure in your course of study.

What happens if I fail the NJ State Board Exam?

Not the end of the world! You can retake the test as many times as you need to pass. Over 80% of CAPRI students pass the first time. For those who need additional help, CAPRI graduates are offered a "Mock State Board Review" until you pass your test. This is at no additional cost to you.

Can I transfer my license to a different state?

You need to meet that particular state’s requirements for licensure which varies from state to state. Check with the Cosmetology Board in that state since some states may require that you to return to school for additional hours of study.

When I get my license, can I teach Cosmetology?

Those who have a valid N.J. Cosmetology License can register for CAPRI's 600 Hour Instructor Training Course. Upon graduation of the course, you must pass the State Board Test to become licensed as an Instructor. Scholarships are available.

  When can I start working?

The state of N.J. is unique, you can start working in a salon while you are still in school! As long as you have completed half the course and received your Senior Permit, you are permitted by the state.

When can I start my own Salon or Spa?

Anyone can own a salon! Yet to manage a salon in N.J., you must have a valid N.J. Cosmetology, Esthetician or Nail Technician License for at least 3 years.

When do I need to start paying back my Loans?

If you have applied for Financial Aid, you need to start repaying your student loans 6 months AFTER you graduate at ONLY $50 per month.

When do I need to start paying back my Grants?

NEVER! Grants are gifts from the government to support your education and you are not required to pay them back. What a gift!
